WITH SHOCKWAVE TREATMENT FOR SPORTS INJURY & JOINT PAIN

Osteo Pain Health Care on Eglinton Ave East in Scarborough Ontario, is proud to offer Shockwave therapy for sports injuries and joint pain.

Extensive studies have been made on a range of conditions and the impact of shock wave therapy on those conditions, and the results are overwhelmingly positive. From just one study abstract comes this important finding:

“In conclusion, ... The biological mechanism of musculoskeletal shockwaves appeared to stimulate the expressions of angiogenic growth factors and induce the ingrowth of neovascularization. Neovascularization may play a role in the improvement of blood supply and healing of tendon and bone. “

So what does this mean?

Angiogenic and neovascularization refer to new cell and tissue generation - an important part of the healing process. Shock wave therapy has been found to induce and speed up tissue repair and healing, allowing patients to find relief from painful injuries, and return to work, play and life again.

Targeted Treatment Works By:

Inducing neovascularization - new blood vessel formation - bringing fresh supply and nutrients to the site of injury

Reducing inflammation - sound wave therapy is shown to increase mast cells, which decrease inflammation

Stimulating Collagen Production by stimulating the precursors to collagen synthesis in the body.

Dissolving Calcified Fibroblasts which form on injured tissue and reduce range of motion

Releasing Trigger Points and pain by various mechanisms in the body, giving patients relief from pain.

What Should I Expect During A Shockwave Treatment?

We will palpate the area to be treated in order to locate and target distressed tissues. We will apply some gel, similar to an ultrasound, which may feel cool on your skin. The shockwave device will be placed over the gel and turned on to deliver a powerful sound wave treatment that will stimulate tissue healing at the site of injury.

Will it hurt?

It is a short treatment that may be quite uncomfortable for a short time of  5 - 20 minutes.

If you feel pain, we can reduce the intensity of the therapy wand.

You may feel some tenderness 2 - 4 hours after treatment. Most patients report this not to be troublesome or limiting in any way.  You may or may not experience a more immediate pain, though this is a rare occurrence.

Most people find the treatment to be comfortable enough.

How long does shockwave treatment take?

Therapy sessions are short - usually 20 - 30 minutes in length. Treatment duration is typically just about 3 - 5 minutes per treatment area. Depending on the chronicity and severity of the symptoms, and the length of time since the injury, normally 3 - 5 treatments are required, 7 to 10 days apart.

If your situation is chronic there is a chance of 2 or more added treatment may be needed.

Most people find relief begins after the very first session.
